Summer Reading for  9th Grade:  Introduction to Grammar and Literature

  • The following are the sections of Edith Hamilton’s Mythology that you must read prior to the first day of school. In a note book  or using a computer, as you read each story, take brief notes on the names of the gods and goddesses, the other mythical characters, and write very brief summaries of the plots of the stories.  There will be two types of evaluation for summer reading:  1) you will submit your notes for a neatness and completion grade; 2) you will take a test (matching, true-false, multiple choice) on the reading.

(Note: if the page numbers are incorrect due to a different edition, use the Part or Title of the story to indicate the sections to read.)
All of Part One: “The Gods, the Creation, and the Earliest Heroes”            pp. 21-118
Part Two: “Stories of Love and Adventure” –read only the stories listed below:

  • Cupid and Psyche pp. 121-134
  • Orpheus and Eurydice pp. 138-142
  • Pygmalion and Galatea pp. 145-150
  • The Quest of the Golden Fleece (About the Hero Jason)pp. 159-179
  • Phaethon pp. 180
  • Pegasus and Bellerophon pp. 184-190
  • Daedalus pp. 192-194

Part Three: “The Great Heroes Before the Trojan War”—read only these 3 stories:

  • Theseus pp. 209-223
  • Hercules pp. 224-243

Part Four: “The Heroes of the Trojan War”—read only these three sections:

  • The Trojan War pp. 255-276
  • The Fall of Troy pp. 277-290

Part Six: “The Less Important Myths” –only read this story:

  • Midas pp. 411-413
  • J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit

There will be a reading comprehension test the first week of school on this novel. Take notes as you read, if necessary to enhance your memory of the novel.
